Introduction to Gnosis

The Science of Consciousness

Gnosis is a transcendental and transformative wisdom that teaches humanity to see, hear and touch all things that were previously considered great mysteries and riddles. It is a true scientific school of initiation into life, aiming for profound transformation of the human being.

DEFINITION

Know Thyself

The word Gnosis comes from Greek and means 'knowledge'. But it is not merely intellectual knowledge - it is direct, experiential knowledge deeply connected to the spiritual dimension. Gnosis is, as Venerable Master Samael Aun Weor explains, the natural functionalism of consciousness, a philosophia perennis et universalis.

Gnosis is a mystical philosophy and way of life based on a rational and scientific conception of the universe. It appears in times of crisis as a significant ideological current, so that humanity can achieve physical, psychological, social and spiritual transformation.

This wisdom is found in the Mysteries of Mithras, of Eleusis, in Hermeticism, in the Mysteries of Dionysus, the Great Mother, of Isis, in Orphism and Pythagoreanism, in Egyptian and Tibetan books. Gnosis developed within Christianity as esoteric Primitive Christianity.

'Man, know thyself, and you will know the Universe and the Gods.'

ORIGINS

An Ancient Wisdom

Gnosis transcends geographical, cultural and religious boundaries. Its origin dates back to the beginnings of humanity, when the first civilizations tried to understand the mysteries of life, the universe and the mind.

Ancient Egypt

The esoteric teachings of Egyptian priests, the Mysteries of Isis and Osiris, and the Book of the Dead already pointed to the need for spiritual awakening and inner purification.

Classical Greece

Greek philosophers such as Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle integrated gnostic elements into their systems. The idea that the material world is a shadow of divine and spiritual reality is at the center of Platonic thought.

Primitive Christianity

In the first centuries of Christianity, gnostic movements such as the Valentinians and Sethians emerged, emphasizing self-knowledge and direct experience of God.

Hinduism and Buddhism

The esoteric schools of the East, such as Vedanta and Tantra, also explore the concept of inner knowledge that frees humanity from the illusions of the world.

Hermeticism and Kabbalah

In the Middle East, Hermeticism and Jewish Kabbalah brought profound contributions about the role of the human soul in cosmic events and the unity between macrocosm and microcosm.

THE FOUR PILLARS

The Four Pillars of Knowledge

Gnosis integrates four fundamental areas into a complete system of self-knowledge and spiritual development.

Science

Gnosis investigates the knowledge of all things according to their principles and causes. In these studies we are not limited to the three-dimensional world, for the existence of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh dimensions is recognized.

Philosophy

The teaching that leads us to reflect on the 'Why' of things: Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going? Why were we born? Why do we live? And for what reason do we die?

Art

The search for beauty in all its forms of expression. This knowledge has given origin to all arts: sculpture, painting, exquisite music, poetry and literature - all of a spiritual character that activates the higher centers of the human being.

Religion

Religion comes from Latin re-ligare: to reconnect, to rebind. Gnosis is a religious knowledge, for it strives to reconnect the human being with the Divinity within.

SELF-KNOWLEDGE

The Path Inward

Gnosis explains that within the human being lie enormous possibilities that can be developed. The task of this teaching is to provide the data that leads to this inner development.

The basic gnostic teaching leads us to knowledge of the physical body, the mortal soul and the immortal spirit. When we know our body, we know in which vehicle we move and who reigns within it. We understand that we can improve it - and its owner equally.

'Man, know thyself, and you will know the Universe and the Gods.'

THE REVOLUTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS

The Three Factors of the Revolution of Consciousness

Gnosis teaches humanity to realize itself from the ground up and to integrate with its true inner Being. This process can be summarized in three factors.

Psychological Death

The elimination of our psychological errors, weaknesses, fears, addictions, traumas and all psychic, mental or emotional aspects that harm us and others.

The Gnostic dedicates his life to dissolving all psychological defects. The goal is the awakening of our consciousness, which unfortunately sleeps imprisoned in thousands of these errors.

Second Birth

The human being possesses various types of energy - intellectual, motor, emotional, instinctive and sexual. Through their wise use we can regenerate the body and create the immortal soul.

The human being is an as yet unfinished being, but through the use of creative energy he can give birth to higher existential bodies of Being and transform himself into a true Human Being.

Sacrifice for Humanity

Only the superior human being, freed from greed, envy, ambition and hatred, is capable of consciously sacrificing himself for his fellow human beings.

Whoever does not live to serve, does not serve to live. Through sacrifice for humanity, a human being can transcend or change his destiny: 'Do good to pay your debts.'

'Something old must die in the human being and something new must be born.'
